CBD for Dogs

CBD is short for cannabidiol, which is one of the  naturally occurring cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. Cannabis has been used for centuries to overcome and treat a variety of health conditions in humans but in the last few years it has also become popular as an herbal supplement for dogs.

How Does CBD Work for Dogs?

Let’s first put aside the notion that CBD will get your dog ‘high’ or alter the animal’s mindset like the cannabinoids tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)  which is favored by marijuana users. CBD has no psychoactive components for human or animal users.

All mammals have what is referred to as an endocannabinoid system. It is made up of receptors in the body that regulate everything from pain perception to inflammation. The cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant have the ability to bind with the body’s endocannabinoid receptors and create positive physical responses such as easing pain or reducing inflammation.

Anxiety

Although CBD does not alter your dog’s mind like THC, it can promote balance and relieve anxiety. Many pet owners give their dog CBD before a long trip to settle the pet’s nerves or before fireworks display or during a thunderstorm because the CBD relaxes the dog and easiest feelings of anxiety.

Inflammation

Pet owners with dogs who suffer from arthritis or other conditions are turning to CBD to naturally bring their beloved furry friend relief. You can apply the CBD as a topical to the inflamed joint and also administer the CBD orally to the dog for whole body health.

Pain

If your dog is suffering from pain, then you might want to try CBD to ease the animal’s discomfort. Humans often use CBD to cope with chronic pain and it works much the same way in dogs.

Itchiness

Apply a CBD topical to any are of the pet’s skin that might appear itchy or sore. The CBD bring itch relief and helps the area heal quickly.

Seizures

Human medical professionals have embraced CBD as an accepted treatment for many childhoods epilepsy disorders. In the U.S., the first CBD prescription medication, EPIDIOLEX was approved for treatment of certain forms of epilepsy in children.

Veterinarians are also discovering that CBD can help reduce the frequency and severity of seizures in canines. If your dog suffers from epilepsy or some other seizure disorder, then you should discuss the use of CBD as a workable treatment and preventative.

Above are just a few uses for CBD in your pet. You’ll want to consult with your veterinarian to discuss using CBD and ensure that the herb is the best treatment choice for Fido.

You’ll find a wide assortment of CBD options available for pets. You can give your dog CBD oils that you place directly on the pet’s food or in the animal’s mouth.

Many brands also sell tasty nuggets laced with CBD that you can use as a treat for your pet. The cannabinoid is also available in pill form or as a topical what you can apply directly to swollen joints or other areas of skin discomfort.

Always take the time to research the CBD brand you are buying for your dog. Remember, to start out with a low dose to see how your pet will react to the herb.

Many pet owners use CBD every day to treat their pet and others opt to use it only when needed. You’ll need to decide what works best for your dog’s particular needs.
